Paintball vandals target buildings, people

Indianapolis - Police are watching for teenagers behind a paintball ambush Tuesday night. Three young men in a car fired at buildings and people on the city's north side.

Why? There is a certain thrill that goes with the preparations. Then comes the ambush. Once its finished, the shooter can live it over and over when it's uploaded to YouTube and other sites where, as the old saying goes it's all fun 'til someone "get's hit in the eye."

"When they're caught they'll be held responsible for their actions," said Sergeant Paul Thompson.

Tuesday night they hit a coffee shop at 74th and Keystone and a business at 56th St. and Illinois. A house in the neighborhood may have been a target as well as the Safeway Supermarket.

They also shot at and hit a WTHR News crew working in the neighborhood. "I tried to get behind the pile of salt bags," said Eyewitness News photographer Tony Fuller, who was setting up a live shot about 10:45pm.

Fuller say a youth "got out from the passenger side window and aimed a gun over the roof." He was hit in the arm and leg by paintballs. Fuller added "(I'm) glad I wasn't hit on the face or the eye."

"The balls do travel at a relative velocity that can do damage to soft tissue. But hit in the eye, the damage can be great. Bruising from paintballs to even chemical reaction to the material inside the paintball," said St. Vincent ER Dr. Ryan Vinus.

There are real health consequences, like the possibility of blindness. Theres' legal issues too.

"If there's minor damage it could be a mischief charge," said Sergeant Thompson. "But, if someone strikes someone and causes pain or injury that would be a battery charge." He says, depending on the circumstances, the shooter could face criminal recklessness charges.

"What happens when they fire the weapon at somebody licensed to carry a handgun who thinks they're a victim of an assault with a firearm? They may choose to defend themselves and fire back."

A paintball prank can also turn deadly. Yellow spatter could turn blood red.

The Huntsville Young Professionals are holding their "Get Hit with HYP" paintball party Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Missions Paintball Park, 26668 Newby Road in Athens. The location is between Madison and Athens on U.S. 72 about 17 miles from downtown Huntsville.

The event will allow HYP members to have fun with paintball at a location away from the rush of the city. Missions Park Paintball offers four fields including semi-wooded, uneven terrain and a huge Spool Field that allows groups to play a quick-paced, stealthy game.

Players should wear plenty of layers of clothes for ample padding and maximum entertainment. The price is $20 and will include rental equipment and 500 rounds of paint. Fun gun thieves face serious trouble

Thieves who stole paintball guns and equipment from a fun park may have thought they were stealing toys but could face serious firearms charges.

AE Funpark in Maungakaramea was raided about Thursday, February 28, say owners Chris and Shelley Angus.

Equipment worth more than $10,000 was stolen from a secure shed, including 10 paintball guns, carbon dioxide cylinders, four masks, paint pallets and a refill bottle with home-made fill adapter.

However, Chris and Shell are elated some of the irreplaceable gear has now been recovered and one person has been arrested.

A 17-year-old man appeared in court yesterday charged with burglary, after the couple did some detective work, including using security footage from local businesses and passed the information to police.

Police say the alleged offender could face firearms charges, as paintball guns are considered to be air rifles under the Arms Act.

Two more people are being interviewed, say police.

Chris and Shell are grateful for the help from local businesses to recover the equipment.

Shell says the paintball guns are very dangerous, especially if used without masks.

"If you get hit in the eye with a paintball you’ll loose an eye," she says.

"People see them as toys but in here it’s controlled. Idiots running around shooting the public is a recipe for disaster."

A hotel and private fence were targeted by paintballs after the theft but the paint is water soluble and washed off.

Shell says anyone who has been shot at should contact the police straight away.

Chris says the paintball gear is unique in New Zealand, as it was imported then modified.

Chris and Shell started the fun park on their 24ha farm about 12 months ago, after looking for a business that could be run from home while looking after their two children, aged four, and 20 months.

About 60 to 80 people a week now use the paintball range, and the Mid Western Paintball Club runs regular days on the site.

AE Funpark has broadened to go-karting and clay target shooting but these were not affected by the burglary.

Shell believes the culprits had come to the range before.

"It wasn’t an opportunist theft. They came here to steal paintball guns," she says.

Unfortunately, two neighbours were away at the time of the burglary and the fun park is now looking at increasing security.

The Ontario Provincial Police have charged a 16-year-old Ontario boy with weapons-related offences, following a terrifying shooting spree on Highway 401 near Toronto Sunday.

Investigators say they received several phone calls Sunday afternoon from witnesses that a boy was sitting in the passenger side of a pickup truck, shooting at cars on the multi-lane highway near Port Union Road, just west of Pickering, Ont. An as-yet unidentified man was driving.

"The phone calls were quite frantic," OPP Sgt. Cam Woolley said Monday. "Everybody who called was terrified for their lives."

He said cars driving along one of North America's busiest highway were braking and swerving to avoid the shots.

Fourteen OPP cruisers, along with the Toronto Police Emergency Task Force, were called in to respond to the call.

Police were able to locate the pickup truck a while later, and found that the gun used was actually a paintball gun that closely resembled a real assault rifle.

"It looks like a real gun," Woolley said. "It was being fired at cars going at 100 km/h. Any person, even a gun expert, would have believed it to be real."

He said it was fortunate that no one was injured.

"It could have broken windows on cars, and the paint itself could have hit the drivers," Woolley said. "We were quite relieved that no one was injured."

"We got the impression that they thought it was a practical joke," Woolley said. "We don't think that this is funny. It was considered a genuine call about someone firing an assault rifle."

It is not illegal to own a paintball gun but it is an offence to point it at someone who believes it to be a real weapon, he added.

The 16-year-old, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, faces nine criminal charges.

Investigators are also looking into charging the man who was driving the rented pickup truck.

Dealing with 'Paintball Rambo'

A week ago today in the Osborne Village area, an unknown man (assumed to be homeless) is "dumpster diving."

It's a slang term for searching through residential trash cans or commercial dumpsters in search of food or something of value that can be sold for a few dollars. Recycling in its most primitive form.

However, an unimpressed local resident yells at the down-on-his-luck man to get lost. Partially complying, the man shuffles off a short distance to another potential pot of gold. Now the self-appointed "block cop" is really angry and is going to deal with this nuisance once and for all.

Marching inside, he grabs his trusty paintball gun, which has enough power to seriously injure someone.

A paintball capsule can travel almost the length of a football field in one second.

"That'll teach that worthless piece of whatever not to mess with my neighbourhood's garbage," he vows.

However, "Paintballing Rambo" doesn't count on a witness, who for some strange reason feels the dumpster diver is a real person who shouldn't be treated as target practice. The police are called and charges are laid. But the homeless man is long gone.

Although encouraged to do so, he may not come forward to testify. Possibly because he feels he'll be blamed for the incident. Possibly because past experiences tell him he won't be treated respectfully. Possibly because he has outstanding warrants and doesn't want to be anywhere near a police station.

With or without a victim's complaint, the accused may still be convicted of being in possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. But if found guilty, what will the sentence be? Will it have the same severity as if he shot at an upstanding, tax-paying citizen?

Will it send a broader message that the homeless are also valued citizens and entitled to the same protections as everyone else? Or will it be a mockery of equal justice, like the 3.5-year slap-on-the-wrist Michael Cochrane got for the savage murder of the homeless Guy Cloutier in a downtown bus shelter in 2005?

While left to the discretion of the judge, I have a creative suggestion for sentencing if there is a guilty verdict. How about the convicted be sentenced to living on the streets for a month?

Sentence conditions will be the same as those who do live on the streets. His only possessions must fit into a backpack. Credit cards, cash and personal identification are prohibited. He is permitted to stand in a line with hundreds of others for a free meal. Since public urination is illegal, he will have to convince business owners to allow him to use their washrooms. He can sleep under a bridge, be at Siloam Mission by 9 p.m. for a free bed, or go to Main Street Project for a floor mat.

And he will have four options for income. Welfare is a possibility. Hopefully $441 per month, including housing, is enough. A temp employment agency may have work for minimum wage -- if he's there by 6 a.m. The third option will be panhandling on Portage Avenue. That's an easy gig, except for the abuse he'll get from passersby.

Or lastly, he could head over to Osborne Village to do some dumpster diving. You never know what he might find to eat or sell. And he can hope nobody over there has a paintball gun.

Rotarians unite for paintball warfare

The four rotary clubs of Guam came together on Saturday for their first ever Rotary Clubs of Guam Paintball Tournament held at the Tiyan Paintball Field.

Rotary Club of Guam member Mark Fish was the primary organizer of the tournament. According to him, the tournament served as a way to bring together the four rotary clubs of Guam.

“We just wanted to bring all the clubs together for fun, fellowship and good competition and also to strengthen the organization overall,” Fish stated. “After talking to Van Shelly, President of the Rotary Club of Guam, we decided a paintball tournament was something we wanted to do.”

He added that ‘hopefully we can make it an annual thing.’

The rotary clubs of Northern Guam, Sunrise Guam, Tumon Bay, Guam as well as the Guam Rotaractors all participated in the eight round, double round robin event. The rules of warfare were simple: the last man standing from each game got the win and one point for their respective team.

At the end of the day, the Rotary Club of Guam’s Rotary A team emerged as the overall winner after dominating all of the other teams without incurring a single loss.

The undefeated team consisted of RCG members Valentino Perez, Dave Silva, Wes Cassidy, Dan Beaver, Rob Stahl.

A PAINTBALL operator with a five-star rating and A-list clients, including Wayne Rooney, is fighting for the future of its Ringwood site.

Delta Force owns a string of centres across the country, including the Vinewood centre at Wattons Ford Common near Matchams.

Paint-balling is an increasingly popular choice for stag parties, team-building events and school excursions.

But East Dorset council says the centre was built without planning permission and the owners had not applied to change the use of the ground.

The council says that buildings including a wooden fort and castle, wood-chipping trails and an access road have all been built without planning permission.

Cllr Mike Dyer, the chairman of the council's planning committee, said he was puzzled by the decision of the operators to build the facility without authorisation.

"It seems strange that this development was carried out without asking for full planning permission," said Cllr Mike Dyer. Mike Hirsh, the council's senior planning officer, said the district authority was seeking to close the park.

"We expect all of our enforcement notices to be upheld. We are effectively appealing for cessation of use and for all the structures to be removed," said Mr Hirsh.

The park is built on green belt land adjacent to the Avon Valley Special Protection Area, a site of special scientific interest, Mr Hirsh added.

The council was also concerned by parking implications for Wattons Lane, said the planning chief.

A spokesman for Delta Force said staff from the company's planning department were out of the country and unavailable for comment.

A public enquiry will be held to decide the park's future at the council's Furze Hill headquarters on April 29 at 10am.
